Similar functionality was just added in NetBSD-current a few days
ago. Here's my file /etc/resolv.conf. Note the last line:

domain          fsa.ca
nameserver      192.197.96.1
lookup          yp bind file

(Yeah; I'm sick -- I run YP. I don't need to do this, but it
increases the changes of me catching it when it breaks.)
