the title says most of what i want to get across; from
the looks of it, *something* changed which causes lots
of programs to either core or return without printing anything.

that is, i installed a new version of libc.so ("revision 1.1")
and make started dropping core, w started returning after printing
nothing, etc.

installing libc with a new minor number fixed the problem and
recompiling make fixed the problem... however, that would *really*
kill people if they deleted the old revision (because then it would use
1.2, and programs would die...).

tomorrow's -current will have libc's major number bumped.

i dunno what the problem is, but i'd bet $$ on the sys_errlist
change...
