 I've incorporated some of your changes in
 191fd30b646b4a33769925d8823d277b9af57bda and made many fixes to shut up
 new warnings in autoconf 2.68.

 I can't accept the AC_DEFINE change to AC_DEFINE_UNQUOTED though; I have
 reviewed the documentation and the usage of AC_DEFINE is correct.  I've
 seen autoconf doing weird things in AC_DEFINE due to other errors, and
 rerunning autoconf just fixes the problem.  Could you try again with the
 updated version and, if you still see any issue, post the errors shown by
 autoconf?
