Subject: crypt(3) not on system?

I keep getting an error when I logon to BSD that says

"Warning:  Crypt(3) is not on system"

I know crypt() is the function that is used to encrypt passwords, but
is warning important.  Does this mean that programs that use crypt()
won't run?  How do I add crypt() if needed?
