I am about to undertake my first application using curses.

I notice in the Sun man page, that SYSV curses will automatically
decode cursor motion keys if the keypad() function is called. No such
function exists in BSD curses.

Do I have to roll my own - i.e. get a possibly multi-key sequence and
use timeouts to distinguish naked Esc from a cursor key?

I looked at the source code for Pine, Elm, Tin and NN for insight - these
programs manage screens of input. Yet: none of them uses the curses library!
They all duplicate part of its functionality. Do the authors of these programs
know something I don't? Is there something wrong with curses?
