Well, I found my problem with XRetina.  The X11R6 version works fine with
the 1.0 kernel, >except< if you don't have the execute bit set on your
.xsession file, it core dumps.  No idea why, but studying xdm-errors
told me about the execute bit.

Once I got it running, it runs fine.  I've read lots of warnings about
how slow it would be, but it seems about right for a machine in its class.
