Well, Stephen, I'm still having only rare successful use from my
Archive Viper Tape drive.  And then only with 'tar'.  'dd' absolutely
refuses to work for me - either reading or writing; at least with
the senarios I've tried.

Did you ever get a (definitive) answer on the "flakey-ness" you were 
looking into?  If you did, I guess I missed your post.
