tech-x11: What's the purposes of afb, cfb, mfb, etc?

Hi,

Recently I noticed that a number of binaries installed under
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules are never used on my i386 machine. Those
include libafb.a, libcfb*.a, libmfb.a, and etc. After I removed
them, I could still run X and KDE programs without any problem.
What are those *fb.a modules there for?
