That's a live image. Downloaded it, this booted as it did for you, on
both the vax780 and the vax8600 emulators.

  This made me curious and I tried to boot a plain NetBSD-made live
image which ... didn't boot (when built from `current`.) *sigh*

  So when I get the next successfully booting `git bisect` step, I'll
additionally try to build the live image and see if that works.
Unfortunately, I didn't keep all the release artifacts from
previous successful builds... (They were not at all automated builds,
but I had to pet them a bit. :-(  )

  Would be interesting to see if the creator of above image had their
patches published somewhere?
