You know quite well what I'm talking about :).

Some "echo" implementations (ksh in particular) interpret \a as the
keyboard bell. Sadly, it appears that NetBSD's /bin/echo, as well as the
echo built into vanilla bourne do not treat this escape sequence
specially. Bash's echo will honor it if the -e flag is passed.

It just struck me that `printf "\7"' should also do the trick,
regardless of the shell in question.
