% dumpfs /dev/rxxyz | head
Something in the first few lines will give it away. On my system
(i386-current-950811), the last word on second line will say "4.4BSD"
if it's in the new format.

% fsck -c 2 /dev/rxxyz

Check fsck(1) for more info.
