I'm a bag full of questions I guess. :-)

I have an LC III, 12mb. I try to compile a kernel, I have the current
sources that are at ftp.netbsd.org. Since my LC III has insufficient
diskspace for the sources, they are accessed over NFS to my other BSD
machine (i386). Unfortunately, on multiple occasions, the compile stops. I
let it go for a few hours, and there is no progress. LAN activity between
the 2 BSD machines has stopped. The machine hasn't quite halted, but a
Ctrl-C won't drop be back into a usable shell.

The last system partial-freeze happened on part of the CDROM parts of the
kernel.

Any ideas?
