The madhatter kernal at
<ftp://ftp.best.com/pub.s/sbrown/madhatter#35.tar.gz> sould work. I booted
it on my 630, and grf0 appeared. (grf0 is needed to run X, and never
appeared in other kernals.)  I never actually tried to run X with it, so I
make no promises.

(Note that this will give you black and white X, not color X.)
