While I had no trouble compiling and running emacs on my IIsi, I found
that for some things GNU emacs was about as fast as an interpreted
TECO emacs I once ran on a roughly 0.1 MIPS PDP-11/23.  I am now
testing 'jed' and 'xjed' which have fewer features but seem to run
much faster.
