Modern versions of gcc are memory monsters I did find through google 
some trickery that constrained it and forced it to clear up after itself 
more aggressively but that did horrible things to compile times.

I'm just contemplating a pkgsrc build on an old acorn32(arm) system with 
64MB of RAM. I think I'll be using distcc and ofloading the actual 
compile work to one of my larger AMD64 systems. ;)
