it looks like Eric's patch is now in CVS anyway:

cvs update -dPA
cvs server: Updating .
RCS file: /cvsroot/pkgsrc/www/php4/distinfo,v
retrieving revision 1.19
retrieving revision 1.20
Merging differences between 1.19 and 1.20 into distinfo
M distinfo
cvs server: Updating files
cvs server: Updating patches
RCS file: /cvsroot/pkgsrc/www/php4/patches/patch-ad,v
retrieving revision 1.13
retrieving revision 1.14
Merging differences between 1.13 and 1.14 into patch-ad
patches/patch-ad already contains the differences between 1.13 and 1.14

I had to delete, clean then re-install the following packages: apache2, apr,
php4, ap2-php4.

If this doesn't work, I'm clueless.
