 A possible explanation - maybe - regarding why mplayer still works...
 By default, if it is possible[0], multimedia/mpv uses opengl video
 output, can you try other --vo options with multimedia/mpv (e.g.:
 --vo=3Dxv or --vo=3Dx11, for the complete list there is --vo=3Dhelp).
 Unfortunately this will not help a lot regarding fixing the issue but
 can isolate the cause.
