It tells the bootloader that it should not try loading modules (.kmod)
before booting the kernel.

I did not investigate in details what the origin might be; pure guessing
makes me think that, as bootloader between i386 and amd64 is shared,
while i386 kernel needs various modules loaded to boot properly, things
are different for amd64. Boot may get confused about that.
