As a followup, I could narrow down the problem to my /etc/mk.conf. It 
contains "DBG=-pipe" in my case. Just as I'm typing this I realise that 
I used DBG= and not DBG+=, although this hasn't failed for me in the 
past. I'm currently building again with DBG+=-pipe and it looks good so far.

I have to admit that I'm not even sure why I used DBG and not something 
like COPTS? *scratch* I can vaguely remember digging through some .mk 
files to determine this. Is this documented somewhere?
