Shortly after I mailed the last message, the system died completely.  Before
that, everything was working real slow and crack was still using only 8 K of
RAM and 14 MB of swap (although it was taking over 95% of CPU time).

I'm running a 960413 kernel (yeah, still) and syslog says

Jul  2 15:03:24 pyy savecore: reboot after panic: alignment fault
Jul  2 15:03:24 pyy savecore: writing core to /var/crash/netbsd.1.core
Jul  2 15:03:44 pyy savecore: writing kernel to /var/crash/netbsd.1

about the crash.  If some knowledgeable person wants to investigate the
core dump, I can give it to him/her.
