No, this is simply not possible! People often install a basic system which is
enough for compiling and running X, but do not have the disk-space or the
knowledge to compile their own kernel.

I just installed NetBSD on a friend's A3000 which wants to compile some small
programs, possibly using X. As he is limited in disk-space, this is surely *no*
option form him.
