radeon RS480 gets "Disabling GPU acceleration"

with latest i386 build upon current I'm having difficulties getting GPU acceleration
with my laptop radeon RS480 card. I'm using pkgsrc modular-xorg-server with the ati driver
okay but is quite slow when moving/updating windows..

Tried setting hw.drm2.drm_debug=1 (even =2) in /etc/sysctl.conf but that doesn't seem to give me any more info.

Any suggestions, or is this simply an old R300 forlorn and to be forgotten?
