Personally? I'd rather have it off. I don't use xterm often, but I do
occasionally, and I'm having trouble thinking of a case where I'd
rather have it consume any more screen real estate than necessary by
default. I've used other terminal emulators that impose that sort of
thing, and I always find it annoying.
For what my tuppence may be worth.
