Yeah, that was my thought.  (^&

Do I have broken tools?  Or bad memory?  (When I put this system together
initially, it had a bad memory module that I exchanged.  Unfortunately, I
don't know of any good memory tester and the BIOS memory tests flash by
without complaint.)

That it happens at the same time as the NFS freezes makes me doubt that it's
caused by memory.  (And that you get NFS freezes is some assurance that I'm
not generally suffering bad hardware.  (^&)

Maybe I should set up a local build directory and go without NFS?

...okay.  By "forget it", do you mean that I should also reverse the changes
you suggested to the Makefiles?  Or are they unimportant now, or still
necessary?

Do you need the "-m amd64" if you're building on an AMD64?  Or is
that just as a habit?
