ah, thanks.   it turns out that my other test system was a hybrid
3.3.6 server/4.1.0 applications system.   when i reverted to the old
3.3.6 lib/X11/fonts, things went back to normal!


the root of the problem i'm running into is that 4.1.0 servers are not
working well on systems where i've got 3.3.6 servers.   yet, i have other
systems that require 4.x (and work fine with it).
