Where did you get the binaries or sources from? NetBSD or XFree86?

I don't know if it makes a difference but my configuration has protocol
"WSMouse":

    Identifier  "Mouse1"
    Driver      "mouse"
    Option "Protocol"    "WSMouse"
    Option "Device"      "/dev/wsmouse0"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
