Thanks for the offer to help.  In the meantime I read the relevant docs
and a nice article by Luke Mewburn and figured stuff out and did the
import to the vendor branch.  We are now up date with Lua 5.3.4 and all
currently know bug fixes applied.

From time to time PUC Rio publishes bug fixes on
https://www.lua.org/bugs.html without making a new release.  These bug
fixes I applied the usual way (patch, commit).
