$ ls -l /usr/sbin/sendmail
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  21 Nov 19 11:16 /usr/sbin/sendmail ->
/usr/sbin/mailwrapper

It's a symlink to mailwrapper, so it invokes the sendmail-compatible
interface of the configured MTA.
