I would put it much stronger than that. Subjective metrics of ugly are
the only thing we have standing between us and "Cthulhu ftagn", and
are perhaps the most important resource available for a large software
project that doesn't have a fixed lifespan.

I'd say that someone who seriously and genuinely believes what you
quoted (I don't think pooka actually does) should not be on core and
perhaps not be a committer at all.
