What distinguishes variables which require no warning if they do not
exist? A switch is imo preferable because it can be turned on or off
without search/replace in the config file .. (and -qq can be used for
'really quiet' :)
On the other hand, the projected use for this is probably with -f rather
than at the command line anyway? If so, I wouldn't see a problem with
