Or something simpler: a failed drive.   That's the most likely reason I
can think of for someone to need to boot in single user mode, edit
/etc/fstab, and press ^D to get back to his desktop.  

Don't think it won't happen or that "naïve" users wouldn't take advantage
of it.  Apple walks people through booting up in single user mode for $49
a ticket, and Windows suffers grieviously for its "safe-mode" halfway
