The fix may be trivial, but one would first have to think out a test case,
which may not be so trivial. I wouldn't know how to enter UTF8 from the
top of my head; some tests for src/regress/usr.bin/cut would help
analyzing this, can you provide some?
Also, I wonder if it's worth to invoke some cpp(1) magic to avoid having
essentially the same code twice.
