Actually, I'm not quite sure that's correct.  With an UTF terminal,
and a filename consisting of all special German letters (äöüÄÖÜß),
and LC_CTYPE set to en_US.UTF-8 (LANG not set), ls gives me:
"äö ? ? ? ? ?", while ls -w correctly gives me "äöüÄÖÜß" -- I
thought the point was that I wouldn't need -w?
