I looked at msgs(1) and couldn't immediately figure out how to make it
do the same thing, and since I already wrote the news program, I ended
up using it instead.

If anybody's interested, I did put it up for download by whoever wants
to from http://www.netmeister.org/apps/news.tar.gz, but I agree that
making it a package is somewhat overkill.
