The open question was: isn't logging the event, maybe with a suitable
hint how to work around the problem, enough in this case?

I.e. detect the error, log a message telling the admin to update the PXE
roms or create a symlink to the broken name - and then fail the request.

Me, as an admin, would still have to figure out how to enter 0xff (a valid
printable character in my locale btw., but not on my keyboard) for the
symlink, but I think I would get that right.
