Actually it would be nice to sort out sample config files for
dialup ppp that actually work with a modern ISP and only need
the phone number, username and password added.

Also the MTA needs to know how to queue outbound mail (for when
the ppp link is down) and optionally pull the name of the ISPs
MTA (and DNS) from the ppp info.

sendmail may be OTT, but it will do the job [1] - especially if you
have a config file with all the masquerade options set.
Would be nice to have one of those lurking as well.

You also need fetchmail (or similar) to pull mail from a remote
mail server.

[1] except IIRC you need to find something to do local delivery.
