Basically like vi displays iso-8859-1 files when the "C" locale is in effect:

Liebe Gr\xfc\xdfe!
~
(which should read: Liebe Gre!)

So no harm should happen, but of course, since the protocol extension is 
missing, you won't get all the information through.
