Some nits:

* "val" and "dummy" must be moved into implementation-reserved
  namespace, too.

* Why magic instead of "unsigned char val[sizeof(double) / sizeof(char)];"?

* The definition of HUGE_VAL looks far too complicated. :-) How about
  "#define HUGE_VAL __infinity.dummy"?
