a quick perusal of the sendmail source shows it to be using funopen(),
and check _read/_write/_seek/_close for equality to internal
functions, and _cookie as a place to store stuff (but it only copies
it, never modifies it).

anything outside of that seems to be, imho, possible reliance on
quirks?
