Hi,
I think it would be good thing to replace the GNU awk we currently have
in tree with nawk - this is the AT&T "new" Awk written by
Kerningham & others. Besides much friendlier licence (I'm appending
it for reference), it's faster than gawk (sometimes much faster).
Couple of scripts I've tested run 10% - 1700% faster with nawk than
with gawk, the results seemed OK from (very) brief scan. I've also
tried mawk - this is real performance winner, it was often
5-10 times faster than either of gawk and nawk. Unfortunately, mawk
is under GPL.

I don't have much experience with nawk. What do you think, is it
good enough replacement of gawk ?

Jaromir
