Then why don't we put it to bsd.own.mk? When we are doing cross-build,
we specify the target MACHINE/MACHINE_ARCH, which contain its endianness
information. No need to dig it up from target sources.

IMO, "FOO!= [script]" assingments in Makefile should be used only to
pull in environment dependent values like objdir, toolchain versions etc.
