splitting a network without renumbering some of the machines.

e.g., consider 

prefix.1 prefix.2 prefix.3 
prefix.5 prefix.6 prefix.7
prefix.9 prefix.10 prefix.11
prefix.13 prefix.14

is split by a router such that the 1,2,3,9,10,11 machines make one group
and the others the other, you can do that by using a netmask of... *thinking
