| Pardon my ignorance, but ... what is a _dty_?

  Okay, now that we know there are dialin ttys (dty) and callout
ttys (cty) -- what are they used for? There is no mention anywhere
in the man pages, and I personally have never used anything but tty.
So what's the magic behind them?
