I've just had a look at a FreeBSD system (2.2.7 stable), and at the end of
/etc/rc.conf, it has:

  ##############################################################
  ### Allow local configuration override at the very end here ##
  ##############################################################
  if [ -f /etc/rc.conf.local ]; then
          . /etc/rc.conf.local
  fi

I'd like this better than the proposed way, as it's more similar in
putting local changes to a "local" file, similar to rc.local.
