I also like option C best (SHLIB_VERSION_FILE=...); it doesn't seem
particularly difficult to implement, and is flexible enough to use for
other things besides arch-specific versioning. (e.g.,
object-format-specific, or multiple related libraries where the
versions are intended to always stay in synch..).
