Is there some reason my PR 1709 is being sat on? Or is it just that I
marked it non-critical/low so people have been deferring it when
looking at PRs to handle? I've been running with those changes since
well before I generated the PR - probably a year, by now - so I think
they're at least somewhat burnt in.

I've been tracking -current, so if the patches in the PR don't apply
cleanly I'll be glad to supply patches that do - at least relative to
the 1.2 release branch, which is all I have access to, AFAIK.

I would particularly like to see the crypt_makesalt() API go in, even
if none of the rest gets adopted; I see it, or something like it, as
critical to writing client code that needs to generate password hashes
in a reasonably extensible manner.
