slow ld when linking mame

Hi!

When linking the final binary for pkgsrc/emulators/mame, I have (on a
usually fast machine) an ld process running at 100% CPU for over half
an hour.

I wonder why this is taking so long, and if it can be sped up. Any
ideas?
