curious build.sh error

Sometimes, build.sh prints a warning,

./build.sh: cannot create
/u5/dyoung-scratch/pm-nbsd/R/i386/binary/kernel/netbsd-GENERIC.gz: permission
denied

and blithely continues without overwriting the old netbsd-GENERIC.gz with
a new gzipped kernel. I find that the permissions on the .gz are 444,

% ls -l /u5/dyoung-scratch/pm-nbsd/R/i386/binary/kernel/netbsd-GENERIC.gz
-r--r--r-- 1 dyoung users 4921189 Jun 27 16:50
/u5/dyoung-scratch/pm-nbsd/R/i386/binary/kernel/netbsd-GENERIC.gz

I don't understand how the permissions get that way. Any ideas?

Dave
