I'd say build.sh's refusing to run if DESTDIR is unset in the user's
environment (which includes mk.conf at that point, no?) rather than
setting it to a (scary!) default would be totally reasonable and
satisfy Greywolf's complaint nicely.

You can still set it to / explicitly if you enjoy taking potshots at
your toes...
