Actually, I'd go a little bit further to say that BSDSRCDIR should be used
as _SRC_TOP_ unconditionally if it exists (and the test file exists
underneath it).  I can imagine some oddness in cases like putting "gnu" on
another filesystem and symlinking it; there's not an easy way to deal with
that via "cd .."s, but setting BSDSRCDIR can eliminate all the confusion.
